SETTING THE NECK WITH WEDGES ("German" Style)

This system was used by Stainer to attach the neck on gambas.
The pictures of a Stainer gamba in vol. II of the Walter Hamma book "Violin makers of the German School" were really helpful in understaing this technique.
Page 340 shows details of the soundboard and back of a Stainer instrument which is apparently in unaltered form.

One can notice that the neck block is in fact part of the neck itself, and the sides are attached to it by means of two wedges, with a technique that's similar to the one used on the violin in the previous page.
