SETTING THE NECK
The absence of the top corner block seems to be a common feature in
viol construction; with this method there is no neck block per se, just
an extension of the neck inside the instrument, to fix back, shoulders
and soundboard together.
It is easy to see also components of the violin family constructed with
a similar neck.
In the photos a violin made in Austria in 1774: two spruce wedges fasten
the neck to the ribs.
